"No Signal" on one camera — or a whole black screen?

First, split the problem in two, because the causes are different:

  • One camera shows "No Signal" / "Video Loss" while the others work → the problem is that camera, its cable, or its power.
  • All cameras are black or offline at once → the problem is the recorder (DVR/NVR), its power supply, the PoE switch, or the network — not eight cameras dying together.

Work through the fixes below in order. Most "no signal" cases in UAE homes and shops are solved in the first four steps without any new equipment.

Fix 1: Check power first — it is the cause half the time

  • Analog cameras: check the 12V adapter at the camera end. Adapters and power splitters die quietly, especially in hot attic and rooftop enclosures. Swap with a working camera's adapter to confirm.
  • IP cameras on PoE: check the port light on the NVR or PoE switch. No light = no power. Try the camera on a different PoE port.
  • Whole system dead: check the recorder's power brick and the socket's breaker. After a power cut, some recorders need a manual restart.

Fix 2: Reseat the connectors

Heat cycles loosen connections. Unplug and firmly replug the camera's connector at both ends — BNC twist-lock for analog, RJ45 clip for IP. A connector that clicks in weakly or wiggles is your suspect: corroded or badly crimped ends are the most common single fault we find in Ajman and Sharjah villas, because outdoor junction boxes cook at 60°C+ all summer.

Fix 3: Restart the recorder properly

Power off the DVR/NVR, wait 30 seconds, power on, and give it three minutes. This clears frozen decoder channels — the case where the camera is fine but its channel shows black. If a channel returns after restart and drops again within days, note it: that is a failing port or overheating recorder, not a cable.

Fix 4: Rule out the display, not just the cameras

If the monitor shows nothing at all, test the recorder's second video output (HDMI vs VGA) or view the system from the mobile app. App works but TV doesn't = display cable or monitor input, and your recording never stopped.

Fix 5: For IP cameras — the network checks

  • Camera offline in the app but fine on the NVR screen → internet/router issue, not the camera. Restart the router.
  • IP conflict: two devices sharing one address knock cameras offline in patterns. Happens after router replacements — common here after ISP upgrades.
  • Long cable runs: Ethernet beyond ~90 metres drops intermittently. Gates and boundary walls in large villas often exceed it; an extender or midspan switch fixes it.

Fix 6: Heat, dust and water — the UAE tax on electronics

A camera that fails every afternoon and recovers at night is overheating. A camera that failed after rain or heavy AC condensation has water in its junction box. Open the box: green corrosion on connectors means moisture found a way in. Reseal with proper glands and self-amalgamating tape — not office tape.

Fix 7: Confirm it is not the camera itself

Swap the suspect camera with a working one (same cable, same port). Problem follows the camera = camera dead. Problem stays on the cable = re-run or repair that cable. Cameras that show rolling lines, purple tint, or night-vision-only images are failing internally — replace, do not resuscitate.

When to stop and call a professional

  • The cable run itself is damaged (chewed by rodents, cut during landscaping, melted on a hot surface)
  • Recorder ports burned after a power surge — common after grid fluctuations
  • System needs reconfiguration and nobody has the passwords
  • The failure keeps returning every few days

Recurring failures are a design problem — undersized power, unsealed boxes, cheap cable — and patching them monthly costs more than fixing the cause once. That is exactly what our CCTV maintenance & AMC service exists for: scheduled health checks, sealed connections, and a technician who already knows your system. If a camera goes down in Ajman, Sharjah or Dubai, we are usually on site the same or next day. Also see our guide if the cameras show video but nothing is being recorded — a different failure with different fixes.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one camera show "No Signal" at night only?

Night vision draws more power (IR LEDs switch on). A weak adapter or thin cable that survives daytime fails under IR load. Replace the power supply or upgrade the cable core.

All cameras went offline after we changed the internet router. Why?

Your NVR or cameras were addressed by the old router. The new one issues a different range, so devices no longer find each other. They need re-addressing to the new network — a 30-minute job for a technician.

The camera image is there but keeps freezing. Same problem?

Related but different: freezing usually points to bandwidth (too many high-resolution streams), a failing hard disk, or an overheating recorder. Check the recorder's vents and disk health first.

How much does fixing a "no signal" camera cost in the UAE?

If it is power or connectors, it is a minor service visit. A full cable re-run costs more, depending on distance and finish. We quote before touching anything.
