Sharjah regulates CCTV too — and inspections are getting stricter
Dubai has SIRA, and everyone talks about it. But if your shop, warehouse, building or villa is in Sharjah, the rules that matter to you come from Sharjah Police and the municipality — and commercial premises are expected to run working surveillance systems that meet their standards. Businesses discover this the same way everywhere: at licence renewal, after an incident, or when an inspector walks in.

Who needs CCTV in Sharjah?
- Gold and jewellery shops, exchange houses. The strictest tier — comprehensive coverage, high image quality, long retention.
- Supermarkets, groceries, and retail. Entrances, tills and storage coverage.
- Restaurants, cafeterias and shisha cafés. Entry points and cashier areas.
- Warehouses and industrial facilities in the industrial areas — gates, loading bays, storage.
- Residential and commercial buildings. Building owners are expected to cover entrances, lobbies, lifts and parking.
- Villas. Voluntary but increasingly common — and there are placement rules you must respect (more below).
The standards that keep coming up
Requirements are issued per activity and updated over time, but Sharjah inspections consistently look for the same fundamentals:
- Working cameras at every entrance and exit, cash points, and valuable-storage areas — no dummy cameras, no dead channels.
- Image quality good enough to identify faces at entry points and read activity at tills.
- Retention of at least 30 days of continuous footage for typical commercial activities — longer for high-risk categories. Undersized hard disks are the most common violation we fix.
- Correct time and date stamps. Footage with wrong timestamps is rejected as evidence.
- Night performance. Cameras must produce usable images in low light, not black rectangles.
- Privacy limits. No coverage of neighbouring villas' interiors, no cameras in privacy-protected areas.
Requirements differ by activity and are updated periodically — confirm the current circular for your licence type, or make it your installer's contractual problem.
Villa CCTV in Sharjah: the placement rules
Family privacy is taken seriously in Sharjah. When we install villa systems we follow three rules that keep you covered and out of disputes:
- Cameras face your property: gates, driveway, garden, entrances. Never the neighbour's windows, garden or pool.
- Street coverage is limited to your own frontage.

Frequently asked questions
How long must CCTV footage be kept in Sharjah?
Plan for a minimum of 30 days of continuous recording for commercial premises; some activities require more. We size storage with margin so a busy month never overwrites evidence early.
Are dummy cameras acceptable?
No. A camera that does not record is treated as a missing camera. After an incident, it also destroys your insurance position.
Do I need a maintenance contract?

Can you upgrade my existing old system instead of replacing it?
Often yes. Good cabling can be reused; we swap cameras and recorder, keep the runs, and bring retention and image quality up to standard for less than a full reinstall.
